Can you help? - December 2015

Calling all female alumni! Could you be a STEMM Champion for the University?

  • Are you female?
  • Secured a qualification in a STEMM subject from Ulster?
  • Currently work in the STEMM industry?

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in academia.  Ulster University is a proud member of the Charter and currently holds a Bronze institutional award.

Since its award in April 2014, Ulster has been striving to implement the improvements set out in our action plan and we are working towards submitting a Silver application in 2017, through setting up a female academic mentoring scheme, delivering workshops on promotion, improving recruitment information, promoting female role models and supporting school achievements and awards.

Your role as an Athena SWAN Champion would be to help promote, embed and celebrate the Charter across the University and to help develop links with industry.  The Athena SWAN Champions Network meets quarterly to share best practice, to share ideas on the best means for addressing problems and to plan events.  The Network will have a key role in the organisation of a science conference in October 2016.

The Chair of the Network is Dr Mary Hannon-Fletcher, Ulster’s Athena SWAN Champion and Head of the School of Health Sciences.

If you are interested in becoming a Champion we would love to hear from you, please contact us at alumni@ulster.ac.uk

Become a mentor today!

Current students and young alumni across the world tell us that contacts and career development are what they're most looking for after graduation. Our new peer-to-peer mentoring service will permit alumni like you to volunteer as a mentor and set out exactly how you can help: you can describe your ideal mentee and select the number of mentees who can contact you. At the same time, students and alumni looking for advice will be able to find and request specific interactions, such as advice on an application, arranging work experience or even an internship.

This is a free and exclusive service which will enable current students and alumni to connect with Ulster University graduates anywhere in the world.  It will be easy to use and is designed to help alumni make the most of being an Ulster graduate long after graduation.

Academic Links with Mongolia

Academic links with Mongolia

Mr Richard Holmes, the Honorary Consul of Mongolia in Northern Ireland, is inviting expressions of interest from staff and graduates of Ulster University seeking to establish areas of mutual interest with equivalent universities in Mongolia.

Following discussions, the National University of Mongolia has already expressed an interest in developing links with Ulster University in areas of mutual collaboration and possible future academic exchanges. The Honorary Consulate of Mongolia in Northern Ireland would be pleased to facilitate such contacts wherever possible and welcomes the opportunity to build on academic and cultural links between Mongolia and Northern Ireland.

With a population of almost 3 million, Mongolia has recently become one of the world’s fastest growing emerging economies, with a number of key mining projects driving Mongolian economic growth, which now measures in excess of 8% annually. With Mongolia’s GDP per capita expected to quadruple by 2020, this in turn has stimulated an interest in overseas study as well as building links with academic institutions abroad.

For further information on potential links with Mongolia, Mr Richard Holmes (Honorary Consul of Mongolia) can be contacted on mongolia_ni@yahoo.co.uk.

Were you involved with the Commonwealth Games as a participant, coach or member of staff?

Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council (NICGC) is putting together a database of past commonwealth games participants, coaches and staff.  They would like to track down these people wherever they are in the world in the hope of creating an alumni network across the globe.  This will also allow the NICGC to update their alumni on current NICGC news and events.

Please contact Ruth Neill, Capacity Support Officer, Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council if you are able to help or for further information.   Email: ruth.neill@nicgc.org
