Katy AndrewsMuch-loved community campaigner Katy Andrews died suddenly on 5 June 2015.

Katy was a graduate of Ulster University and had been a long term friend and active alumna.

In Walthamstow, where she lived, Katy was active in many groups across the borough, including Waltham Forest Civic Society and Walthamstow Historical Society, and was the former vice-chair of the New Lammas Lands Defence Committee.

Ms Andrews was outspoken on the protection and preservation of Leyton Marshes and was a member of The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

In 2010, she stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate in Lea Bridge Ward, but narrowly missed out on winning the seat to the Labour candidate.  Joe Ward, chairman of the New Lammas Lands Defence Committee, said Ms Andrews, of Edward Road, was in “good spirits” on the day of her death.  “It has come as a tremendous shock to her wide circle of friends and acquaintances.”

Friend Rita Acharya, landlady of the Hare and Hounds pub in Leyton called her a ‘furious supporter’ and a ‘passionate’ campaigner. "She was so passionate about green spaces and held meetings in our conservatory; she loved real ale and pubs.”

Adrian, from Our Community Waltham Forest, said: “As an ardent environmental campaigner she would walk in to a meeting and everyone knew she had arrived. She would put her point of view across immediately which then set the agenda for the rest of the meeting. As she knew her subject this was no bad thing unless you were chairing the meeting and then it became a bit of a battle!

"Katy was a folk singer, regular organist at churches, a hymn writer, a white witch and an expert on pagan activities such as her recent Apple Tree blessing events in mid-winter.”

Katy will be very much missed by all those who knew her.
