Interview with ..... June 2016
Patricia Caldwell
HND Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management 1981, Jordanstown
Job Title: Author and Lecturer, Former General Manager, Le Meridien Hotel Group
Business/Organisation: ESE International College, London
How would you describe what you do in one line?
I combine two roles: that of a lecturer in Hotel Management Studies at an international college; and an author..
Did you plan out your career or has it evolved along the way?
It evolved and I took the opportunities - some amazing - that came to me, without too much thought as to where they would lead, but knowing they felt right.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
The variation and making a difference to others – helping them to achieve.
What has been your biggest challenge to date/and your greatest achievement?
The biggest challenge was my decision to leave the hotel industry at the top of my career, to pursue the next stage of my life, without having absolute clarity of what that would be! My greatest achievement was becoming General Manager of an international hotel chain and more recently to have my first book published.
Why did you choose to study at Ulster University?
It was a new institution and it had the course I was most interested in and quite a few of my friends were going too..
What is your best memory of Ulster University?
The vibrant energy and life on campus in the student village - I had never experienced anything quite like it and without a doubt - meeting my future husband!!
Who or what at Ulster University influenced you most?
I loved the learning and diversity of Ulster University and the academic that influenced me the most was Lynn Fawcett – he not only ensured we studied and learnt in his lectures but he taught us about life and had a wonderful sense of humour – his lectures were always a joy to go to.
What is the best piece of advice you have received and what advice would you give recent graduates in their search for their first job?
The best piece of advice I received was to savour every moment of University life – to really immerse yourself in the moment. The advice I would give to graduates is to follow your passion and take the opportunities when they come - not worry too much about future roles – be flexible on the roles you are offered and they can lead you to opportunities you may not have thought of.
What additional guidance would you give for career progression?
Use your intuition at all times, have gratitude, help others, be kind and develop great network connections.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
At this stage of my career, it is the freedom that both roles give me and in doing so enjoying all aspects of what I am doing.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
To chill, holidays (lots of), volunteering and giving something back, spending time with family, having fun.
